Madison Community Cooperative House Experiences Fire

Shortly after 1am on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, members of Lothlorien Cooperative House at 244 West Lakelawn Place reported a fire and evacuated the building. Lothlorien Cooperative House is part of Madison Community Cooperative (MCC). The cause of the fire is under investigation; it began on a 3rd floor roof deck.

All 33 residents were able to evacuate the building without injury. The Red Cross was on site to assist residents with temporary housing, and UW Madison officials were on site to support residents who are students.

The city’s Building Inspection Department has declared the building temporarily uninhabitable, and MCC is currently working with its other houses and other local cooperatives to help displaced residents find temporary housing.  An estimate of damage is not yet available.

If you would like to provide support (such as clothing, food, shelter, or money) to members of Lothlorien who have been displaced by the fire, please contact Madison Community Cooperative at 608-251-2667 or services@madisoncommunity.coop.

MCC’s mission is to improve the Madison community by providing low-cost, not-for-profit cooperative housing for very low to moderate-income people and to be inclusive of underrepresented and marginalized groups of the community.
